COME AND PRACTICE
I teach small live classes online, four times a week. I work one on one with people just like you, online or in person at your home.
If you're not sure how to start, just call me and tell me what's going on. It takes about twenty minutes, it costs nothing, and I'll be honest about whether I can help.
HOW MY JOURNEY STARTED
As an active teenager i badly injured my back. That's how I found Yoga!
Yoga was the only thing that really worked. It stopped the unbearable chronic pain.
THINGS REALLY DO HURT. AND THINGS REALLY DO CHANGE.
The living tradition of Yoga I teach is called Viniyoga. It's steeped in the teachings of Patanjali, the Upanishads and Samkhya. Two of its main ideas sit at the center of how I work, and both are more practical than they sound. The first is satkara: the things of this world are real. When I hurt myself, it really hurts. Nobody here is going to tell you the pain is in your head. The second is parinama: everything is constantly changing. Day by day, moment by moment. I can't stop that and I can't reverse it. But I can influence the direction change takes. That's the whole proposition. You can't undo the years of pain, but you can influence your direction. Improve how you move, how you breathe, how you sleep, and reduce what hurts.
WHAT THAT LOOKS LIKE FOR YOU
Most people come to me with something specific. A back that's been unhappy for years. A body still in pain after a major surgery. Difficulty breathing because of COPD. Pain caused by severe scoliosis. We start where you actually are, not where a class thinks you ought to be. Your breath leads and your body follows. The practice is adapted to the person, rather than the person being asked to fit the practice. You don't need to be flexible. You don't need any experience. That isn't modesty on my part. It's the whole methodology.
WHERE MY TEACHING COMES FROM
I began practicing Yoga in 1993, and I've taught since 1997, when Gary Kraftsow of the American Viniyoga Institute certified me to teach asana, breathing practice and Sanskrit chanting.
That places me in the lineage of T. Krishnamacharya and his son TKV Desikachar, the tradition that yoga therapy itself came from. I went on to complete AVI's three-year training in the therapeutic use of yoga for acute and chronic conditions, and I'm a Certified Yoga Therapist (C-IAYT). Since 2005 I've been senior faculty at AVI, training other Yoga Therapists and teachers.
I'm sharing this with confidence for one reason. What I'm passing on isn't something I invented. It came down an unbroken line, and my job is to hand it on accurately, in a simple and uncluttered way.
